Since graduating from the UO Iton has embarked on a career as a public school educator. He began his journey as a middle school history teacher in South Central Los Angeles in 2004. After returning to Oregon, in 2006, Iton led a high school alternative education program for three years before teaching high school social studies.  Iton served as an assistant principal at Willamette High School for two years and is currently the Principal of Cottage Grove High School in the South Lane School District.

Iton has worked extensively to promote equity, social justice, and college-and-career readiness among all high school students. Iton’s Ethnic Studies coursework had a major influence on his path as an educator, “Ethinic Studies elevated my level of social consciousness. ES helped me to develop a thorough understanding of how institutional constructs impact the quality of life for disenfranchised communities.” Iton credits his Ethnic Studies background in leading him to pursue a teaching position with underprivileged youth in Los Angeles’ inner-city and low income communities in Oregon. Iton has worked extensively with communities of color in Lane County to promote equity and bridge the Achievement Gap. “Ethnic Studies reinforced my belief that a quality education can level the playing field for those who are less privileged and ultimately benefit our communities.”

Iton currently lives in Creswell with his wife Miriam, and two children Kellen and Alora.
