In Memoriam…Dr. Edwin Coleman, II
The Ethnic Studies Department remembers Dr. Edwin Coleman not only as a fellow scholar, mentor and teacher, but also as one of our program’s early co-founders. In the early – mid 1990’s, Ethnic Studies separated from the English Department’s Folklore Program to become a program in its own right. Dr. Coleman, (English) and Dr. Quintard Taylor (History), were our co-directors at that time. Many of the books that initiated the Ethnic Studies Library, (now in its 17th+ year), were donated by Dr. Coleman.
In AY15, it was our pleasure to invite him to be our keynote commencement speaker. We also had the opportunity to honor him with the very first Sankofa Award, which read, “To Dr. Edwin Coleman, II — In recognition of your critical investment and visionary dedication to the founding of Ethnic Studies at the University of Oregon — June, 15 2015”.
From those of us who remember him as “Dr. C”, to those of us who remember him simply as “Ed”, the Faculty, Staff, Alumni and Students of the Ethnic Studies Department send our sympathies and fond memories to his family.
